Meet the team: Stephen Blears

Our meet the team blog series has allowed you to get to know some of the Procure Plus team. So far, we’ve introduced you to Sarah Casey, senior business analyst, and Michelle Davis, performance analyst. This month, we caught up with Stephen Blears, Senior Systems Manager in our systems team, on why he chose a career at Procure Plus.

Why did you choose a career in this sector?
While completing my degree in Business Studies, I particularly enjoyed the IT modules, so after university I applied for graduate roles within IT departments and I was lucky enough to be taken on as a programmer by large company with its head office here in Manchester.

From there my career progressed and over time I changed my role to become a Business Analyst. After a few different posts in that role, I then moved in to the team management position at Procure Plus that I hold today.

What does your role at Procure Plus look like?
In our Systems (IT) team we look after two areas of the business – firstly our internal hardware and systems, including everyone’s PCs, laptops and software. Secondly, we work with our software delivery partners to maintain our bespoke applications like Schemes Plus. These are used across our client base to help customers manage projects, cost, orders and supplier performance.

My role specifically involves the management of our team, the planning of our workload and making changes to move our systems forward.

Why did you choose to work at Procure Plus?
I was attracted to the social values of Procure Plus. Knowing that my role helps to support these principles, allowing us to make a contribution to the communities we work with, makes a real difference to me.

I quickly realised it is a fantastic place to work with an open, honest culture and great colleagues.

What is your favourite thing about living in the North West?
I’ve always lived in the North West and for the most part in Manchester. It’s a brilliant place to live; the city is a good size with lots to do, but equally you can easily travel out to the surrounding areas to experience something more rural. We have enjoyed many family holidays in The Lake District over the past few years.

If you were taking friends out for dinner in Manchester, where would you go?
One of my favourites is Mr Cooper’s at The Midland; excellent food with a relaxed service, really impressive. Second option would have to be The Grill on the Alley – as long as you like meat, you can’t go wrong!

We’ll be catching up with another Procure Plus team member in February, so keep your eye on the blog!
