The Pembroke House Garden Project grew out of a local need to develop an unusable and unattractive space on Stockport’s York Street estate. The project was initiated in 2008 by the Pembroke Residents Association. Due to its urbanised town centre location, there was little open space on the estate, which comprises a mix of both multi-storey and maisonette living.
Once the mixed funding of £93,000 was acquired – from Stockport Homes and GM Procure’s Sense of Place fund – work began.
The residents’ association worked with the local area housing team and landscape architects to transform the area into a high quality open space for all customers to enjoy.
There are four key features
The project has made a significant physical improvement to the environment of the estate by transforming an unattractive quarter into a sustainable user friendly space that is now used as a community focal point.
Residents, local school children and Tenants and Residents Association assisted in the practical delivery of parts of the scheme. Although the garden project will be maintained by Stockport Homes, residents have undertaken to support the maintenance of the area through estate walkabouts, events and activities.
