About the Programme

Back on Track (BoT) is a Manchester-based charity supporting adults experiencing multiple disadvantages, including drug or alcohol dependency, poor mental health, and homelessness.

Re:vision funding supports BoT’s Volunteering and Progression Programme, which helps members develop skills, access volunteering opportunities, and progress toward employment.

As part of this programme, members can take part in structured courses, including the 12-week Introduction to Health and Social Care course, designed to build confidence, develop relevant skills, and support transition into volunteering roles. Partnerships with ROC CHAT, Cornerstone, North-West Ambulance Service, and GMMH, provide talks, tours, and direct opportunities to connect with organisations.

Bea’s Journey

Bea was in recovery, clean from drugs for the first time in 15 years, when the death of her best friend had a devastating impact on her mental health. She stopped leaving the house, ceased socialising, and neglected her wellbeing. To maintain her recovery, she cut ties with friends and family still engaged in addiction, leaving her feeling isolated and disconnected.

At the time, Back on Track was recommended to Bea, where she enrolled despite initial nervousness about the service and support available. Through the programme, Bea attended courses supporting wellbeing and progression, regained confidence, established routine, and became part of a supportive, diverse community. Within three weeks of starting the Health and Social Care course, Bea secured a voluntary role, applying the skills and confidence she gained. She reflected:

"Without coming to Back on Track, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now – volunteering and looking to the future. This place has given me my confidence and self-esteem back, helped me start living again and not just existing, and is the first place I’ve ever truly felt safe. Being here has given me routine, purpose, and a chance to give back – and I finally feel proud of how far I’ve come." - Bea

Programme Impact

The Introduction to Health and Social Care course has had a strong impact, with all 12 members who completed it continuing to work towards their next steps. One member has already secured employment, three have started volunteering, and the remaining participants are actively pursuing voluntary roles or employment opportunities. Holly, Volunteer & Progression Coordinator, continues to provide one-to-one support to help each member progress.
