About the programme

Goodlives provides a safe environment for individuals to engage in practical workshop settings, supporting those returning to the labour market or taking their first steps towards employment.

Programmes include woodcraft and craft activities, skill scanning to identify transferable skills, and support with overcoming barriers to work. Clients receive a minimum of eight weeks of face-to-face sessions, followed by six months of weekly tracking support, which includes help with job applications, interview preparation, confidence building, volunteering opportunities, and more.

Emma’s Journey

Emma began her journey with Goodlives after experiencing very poor mental health, which had left her suicidal, housebound, and socially isolated. A support worker suggested she contact the team at Goodlives, and although initially unsure of herself, Emma quickly began to feel at ease.

She joined the Upcycling Project, repurposing items that would otherwise go to landfill—reigniting a passion she had previously lost. Alongside this, she received one-to-one support, participated in tai chi and relaxation sessions, and joined a guitar group. The subsidised travel offered by the programme allowed Emma to access activities she otherwise could not afford, giving her a newfound sense of independence.

Through these experiences, Emma developed confidence and self-esteem while gaining practical skills and qualifications. She built friendships and re-engaged with society in a meaningful way, demonstrating the profound impact of holistic support, social engagement, and tailored programmes on personal development.

Programme Impact

Emma’s engagement with the Upcycling Project and associated Goodlives activities has transformed her life. She reports improvements in mental health, confidence, and social connection, alongside gaining tangible qualifications and practical skills. The programme has provided structure, purpose, and a supportive community that empowers participants to take positive steps forward. Emma said:

“I can’t emphasise enough what a positive effect the organisation has had on my life, I am living a life I didn’t think possible 2 years ago, I have made friends, learned valuable skills and qualifications and my mental health has gone from a 1 to an 8. I am no longer afraid to be a functioning member of society. The whole team has a real family feel, everyone is so welcoming, encouraging, caring, and life-affirming. It’s no exaggeration to say the organisation has had a drastic effect on my life for the better. Long may it continue!”.
