About the Programme
Refugees & Mentors vision is for an inclusive society where refugees, people seeking asylum and vulnerable migrants have equal access to job opportunities, enabling them to build sustainable lives in the UK.
Its mission is to support these groups to improve their employment prospects, while working with employers to create inclusive opportunities. This includes offering pre-employment information, guidance, and collaboration to develop inclusive recruitment practices, diversify workforces, and fill skill gaps.

Fitsum’s Journey
Refugees & Mentors first met Fitsum, a single mother in her 20s with her one-year-old son, at Rainbow Haven’s Mamma and Babies group in July 2024.
At her first one-to-one Work Club appointment, she shared her wish to improve her English and find childcare. Three goals were identified: strengthening her English, arranging a nursery place for her son, and getting a device for evening study.
With support, Fitsum joined Rainbow Haven’s ESOL classes, applied for an ESOL course through the ESOL Advice Service, and later secured a Prince’s Trust Development Award to buy a laptop. She also arranged free nursery childcare four days a week.
To help her build confidence more quickly, the team introduced Fitsum to a range of self-study resources, including Duolingo, Heart & Parcel, and the British Council, as well as tips like reading bedtime stories with her son.
Outcome
Fitsum will complete her ESOL Entry Level 3 course this year. On completion, she will be in a stronger position to continue her English studies, enrol in further courses, or apply for jobs or volunteering opportunities.
Securing further education, a laptop, and childcare for her son have been significant milestones in rebuilding her life in Manchester. These steps have laid the foundation for her to move forward with confidence towards independence, learning, and future employment.
