About the Programme

Goodlives provides a safe environment for individuals to engage in practical workshop settings, supporting those returning to the labour market or taking their first steps towards employment. This programme is supported through funding from Re:vision, the subsidiary charity of Procure Plus.

Programmes include woodcraft and craft activities, skill scanning to identify transferable skills, and support with overcoming barriers to work. Clients receive a minimum of eight weeks of face-to-face sessions, followed by six months of weekly tracking support, which includes help with job applications, interview preparation, confidence building, volunteering opportunities, and more.

Keith’s Journey

Keith was referred to Goodlives after moving into Calderwood House, a local homeless shelter. He was struggling with anxiety and depression following the loss of both his mother and his wife, and had returned to Cumbria to be closer to family. Wanting to keep busy while finding stability, Keith joined the Goodlives horticulture course in June 2024.

With previous experience in a garden centre, Keith quickly rediscovered his enjoyment of working outdoors. He attended every session, enthusiastically contributing to tasks and supporting other participants. His positive attitude and willingness to share his knowledge made him popular with the group, which boosted his confidence and improved his mental health.

Recognising his skills, Calderwood House invited Keith to help with their own allotment. He soon became a valued volunteer, transforming the site and suggesting new ideas for its development. His dedication and reliability led Calderwood to offer him a part-time role while he continued to volunteer at the Goodlives horticulture site.

Outcome & Impact

Through his involvement with Goodlives and Calderwood, Keith has not only improved his mental health but also regained a sense of routine, confidence, and purpose. He has since secured a flat of his own, with support to furnish it, and is thriving in both his part-time job and ongoing volunteering.

Keith’s journey shows how therapeutic, practical activities combined with supportive community environments can help individuals overcome personal challenges, rebuild their confidence, and move back into employment.
