About the Programme

Goodlives provides a safe environment for individuals to engage in practical workshop settings, supporting those returning to the labour market or taking their first steps towards employment.

Programmes include woodcraft and craft activities, skill scanning to identify transferable skills, and support with overcoming barriers to work. Clients receive a minimum of eight weeks of face-to-face sessions, followed by six months of weekly tracking support, which includes help with job applications, interview preparation, confidence building, volunteering opportunities, and more.

Mark’s Journey

When Mark moved to Copeland, he was living alone with his dog and feeling isolated. Having previously struggled with alcohol addiction, he wanted to find something meaningful to keep himself busy but felt anxious about starting something new.

After visiting Goodlives and meeting with a coach, Mark decided to try a taster session on the woodwork course. At first, he attended for just a couple of hours at a time to see how he would cope. As his confidence grew and his dog adjusted to being left at home, he built up to attending three full days a week.

Mark thrived on the practical, hands-on projects and enjoyed making items for his home. As he became more confident, he engaged more with staff and other learners and offered to assist with repairing grass-cutting machinery.

When the opportunity arose to take part in a large project at the Goodlives site, building decking and erecting a yurt, Mark was eager to be involved. Seeing the project through from start to finish gave him a sense of pride in his work.

Programme Impact

Following his success on the woodwork projects, Mark was offered a volunteer position as a handyman, completing maintenance tasks and groundskeeping. With ongoing support from his coach, he developed organisational skills, confidence, and the ability to manage his responsibilities independently. His dedication and versatility led to a paid position, working three days a week at the Goodlives site and two days a week at Ennerdale Road, contributing to larger projects and maintaining equipment.

Today, Mark is confident in managing his workload, actively participates in team discussions, and continues to grow in both his professional and personal development. The programme has provided him with structure, purpose, and a clear pathway into sustainable employment.
