At Breaking Barriers, refugees are welcomed into employment through one-to-one advice and guidance, education, and training. Support is provided to refugees and other forcibly displaced people over the age of 18 across the UK.

Said is from Tanzania and arrived in the UK in February 2024. While waiting for refugee status, he was not permitted to work, so he volunteered in Glasgow at a food bank and with a group in Hartlepool collecting rubbish from the streets. Back home, Said studied Marine Engineering and had experience in the field. After coming to the UK, he realised rebuilding his career would take time and that a lack of UK experience was a significant barrier.

Once granted refugee status, Said began applying for roles across the Northeast of England but was not invited to interview. To improve his prospects, he completed a Warehousing and Storage Diploma. In January 2025, he moved to Birmingham in search of more opportunities. Despite securing two interviews, he was unsuccessful and recognised that confidence and UK work experience were holding him back.

In March 2025, Said joined Breaking Barriers. During his initial appointment, he shared his background and career goals. He then worked with his Employment Adviser, Rebecca, who supported him through Jobs Club sessions and interview preparation, including practising techniques such as the STAR method. Said applied for a warehouse role, competing against 400 candidates for 50 positions. With support and preparation from Breaking Barriers, he was offered the job the same day as his interview.

Said is now working as a warehouse operative and is gaining valuable UK work experience. He receives regular feedback and development opportunities and can now see clear progression within the sector. Said shared:

“To start life as a refugee is honestly really, really hard. If it was easy, I would have gotten a job a very long time ago. I am very happy for what Breaking Barriers do because I joined in March and I got my job in May. The very first interview I went for after joining them, is the job I got. Without this help, I would have been looking for a job for a year or more. But help from Breaking Barriers made it was easy.”

Looking ahead, Said hopes to become a Distribution Manager and is exploring ways to build on his previous qualifications in Marine Engineering. Said’s journey demonstrates how personalised employment support can help refugees overcome barriers, build confidence and access meaningful career opportunities in the UK.
