Callum was looking for more stability and security in his life, the role of a personal trainer can have its ups and downs, no pun intended. Procure Plus became aware of Callum through our employment group contacts, at the same time Allied Access had vacancies and asked if we could help. We spoke to Callum to find out more about his ambitions to move career and what he needed to do to get access to construction work. From that in initial conversation we booked Callum on to one of our CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) courses and a new career path was born.

I was a Personal Trainer for 10 years which I really enjoyed. I was working in gyms and also outdoors doing 1 to 1 P/T sessions, however, I fell out of love with it. The hours were unsociable and with me being self-employed it was hard to plan things week to week as I had to work my personal life around clients. My income would vary week to week subject to how many P/T bookings I had and I just wanted to have a job where I had guaranteed hours and income. I looked into changing my career and after talking to my Grandad he suggested construction. My Grandad was a scaffolder, and I liked the idea of working outside, being kept busy in a physical job whilst training towards a new skill set and career.

I wasn’t aware of what to do so I contacted the Hub, and they explained that I would need to attend a L1 H&S in Construction environment course, they booked me in to do a H&S touchscreen test and looked at attending a COTS scaffolding course. Alongside this I was then offered a trial opportunity that was arranged via the Hub with a company called Allied Access.

I was given the opportunity to work on the brand new Co-op arena which is a great site to work on.

I have a supportive team to work alongside and since I started I have not looked back. I really enjoy the job and have working on site since October 2022. The team is great, the work interesting as I’m learning new skills all the time and I also the physical aspect of the job. I have even been getting overtime at weekends which really helps. The next step for me is to look at attending the scaffolding Part 1 course which I’m hoping to get booked onto soon, this will help me work towards becoming fully qualified. Overall, the job has been brilliant. I’m getting a good regular income, I’m happier in my personal life, can provide for and make plans with my family whilst working towards a new career.
