Breaking new ground – Toni Butcher

We met Toni while she was completing an Introduction to Construction Course, which was supported by Procure Plus, North West Construction Hub, and 4 contractors including ISG, Morgan Sindall and Equans.

From this course she completed her CSCS Training and acquired her green labouring card, she was deployed via ROTL (Release on Temporary Licence) to a construction site in Manchester, but due to some unforseen circumstances Toni had to come back and finish her sentence before she went back out to work.

Members of the Procure Plus social value team went into the prison to meet Toni before her release, and support to help find her a role in construction when she was released back into the community.

As she was work ready, Procure Plus were able to speak to a number of employers who could offer her a work trial with the view to give her long term work if she was successful. Wilmott Dixon, who Procure Plus have supported throughout the years with their local labour requirements, made an approach requiring anyone interested in a career in steel fixing.

Procure Plus’s social value team immediately reached out to Toni once she had been released from prison and explained the detail of the role and how the trial/ interview process would work and she was delighted with the chance to meet with Mayo Civils who are the sub contractor offering roles via Wilmott Dixon. Toni attended an interview and was successful.

Toni broke new ground and was the first female steel fixer to start with Mayo since it was founded.

Ray Flemming, MD Mayo Civils said: “she is the first female steel fixer I have worked with in the UK since 1978, it is fantastic result”.

Toni commented, “that the experience has made her more determined to progress and after a week Ray had fed back she is a delight to work with and is going to go far as she was progressing quicker than expected”.

The feedback from site has been amazing, she has never been late or missed a day since she started, even though the weather was harsh for the first couple of weeks, she has stuck with it and is keen to learn, she is reading the plans and is able to give out instruction to other members of the team who have more experience than herself and feel confident to do so.

She is the first female steel fixer I have worked with in the UK since 1978, it is fantastic result.
